Today's miracle
True fact: I woke up from a dream a couple of nights ago and wrote what’s in the image at the top of this post so I wouldn’t forget it.
> If there were a God who created a world with me in it, writing this, and you in it, reading this...
But I forgot it.
Of course. I forget a lot.
But the universe didn’t forget. It was there on that piece of paper when it appeared later. So the universe remembered for me. Thank you, universe.
“Finish me,’ the idea on the paper said.
“Finish it,” the universe said.
I kept falling into one dream or another. From time to time, I woke up.
And here it is.
# If
> If there were a God who created a world with me in it, writing this, and you in it, reading this...
I see a world with me in it, writing this.
I imagine a world with you in it, reading this.
I imagine that if you look around, you’ll see a world with you in it, reading this.
But, you don’t have to imagine. You can do it. Look around. Do you see such a world?
And while you’re at it, imagine a world with me in it writing this. You can do it. Or at least I imagine you can.
Where does this go?
> If there were a God who created a world with me in it, writing this, and you in it, reading this...
…then what?
What is “this”? And what am “I”? And what are “you”? And what are “writing” and “reading?” And where does God fit?
Is the “this” that I am reading and you are writing, the sentence that came in the middle of the night?
Or is “this” the blog post you are reading.
Or is “this” the whole blog.
Or is “this” something more?
Who wrote?
As I’ve written before, I don’t write. Writing happens. It comes to me. I just need to sit down, get out of the way, and let it come. There’s no “me” writing this.
Writing comes to me. This writing came to you, too. It might have come in an email. It might have come in a link to a web page.
It came “through me” and to me. And it’s come to you. If you pass it on to someone else, then it’s come through you, too.
It’s even more accurate to say, “it just came.”
I agree with Roger’s Bacon, who writes Secretum Secretorum and says that “Ideas are alive.” That’s how ideas appear to me.
Who reads?
And what about the “you” that’s reading it.
Who are you? Are you one of the people I know? Are you one that I don’t know? Are you singular, or are you plural?
Do you see that you’re in a world, reading this?
I could say, “that’s undeniable,” but it’s not.
Even though I don’t know which “you” you are, I know you have a powerful ability to deny. When you’re falsely accused, you deny the accusation. And sometimes, you deny what’s true.
You’ve denied to good effect and your sorrow.
So you can deny that you’re reading this. And this. And this. Even as you continue to read.
Creativity, communication, and consciousness are miracles
I say this is a miracle.
“This” is the creativity that brought an idea into being, the communication that brought this idea to you, and the consciousness that can be aware of it.
A miracle.
Here’s the definition of “miracle” that Google provided me just a minute ago:
a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency..
We know the natural and scientific laws that explain how fingers can move on computer keys, how computers encode the characters that the keys represent, how streams of encoded characters are transmitted and stored and transferred around the internet and rendered on the medium you are using to read. That’s all explained.
But what’s not explained is the idea.
What’s not explained is how music or painting comes into existence, or—in this case—how writing appears.
No natural or scientific law, so I claim miracles.
An idea came. Words representing the idea came to me and through me, and the idea has come to you.
Some part or reflection or image of that idea is now realized in some way in your mind.
The idea itself stands outside of space and time.
Are these not surprising events? Are they not events you welcome?
Is not every transition of ordinary consciousness into awareness a surprising and welcome event?
You don’t need God for these miracles of communication. But if you’re going to have miracles, what’s wrong with God, too?
I am not saying there is such a God.
I am not saying there isn’t.
I’m saying that this is what came to me the other night, and this is what came to me today, and what’s now come to you.
Creativity, communication, and consciousness.
Let’s call them miracles.
Wake up, and you can produce miracles.
